Profiling by State police departments is awfully tough to monitor and discuss when the racial traffic stop and arrest data they are bound to collect – by law – is carefully shuttled off to a back room in the Hartford capitol building and ignored.

Public budget priorities are really a form of moral code, where the things we deem important are funded properly, and the things we believe are secondary get little to no financial attention. Up until now, the analysis of the collected law-enforcement data has received the latter in Connecticut. Police departments and unions all say that they would never engage in profiling of the racial variety. So we can happily assume that immediate funding of the analysis of the data was just an oversight, and will be a thoroughly non-controversial measure then. Happy MLK day.
