Reports are circulating around the Web suggesting Apple’s latest gadget — the iPhone 3GS — might be too hot to handle.
While reports of the iPhone heating up is nothing new, there are discussions on Apple’s site going back a year, new more alarming reports are being made that include discoloration and extreme heat.
Slash Gear blogger Chris Scott Barr wrote about an experience he learned of that caused “major discomfort” to the ear after charging it for approximately 20 minutes.
Melissa J. Perenson of PC World wrote a column about her own experiences with the phone:
“I don’t recall how long I had been using the handset, but I was making my way steadily along The Oregon Trail, thank you. And at some point, I became aware the handset had become very hot. Very, very hot — not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too. I was using a game, and then later the Web browser for reading the news about Michael Jackson, all over a Wi-Fi connection while plugged in. And in those circumstances, well…toasty doesn’t even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face. No discoloration to report, though; I have the black handset, and didn’t see any effects.”
While it remains to be seen how widespread this potential iPhone 3GS issue really is, iPhone users might want to touch the back of their phone with their hand before putting it up to their ear to avoid any unnecessary pain.
