If you’re ever in South Africa, be sure not to abuse the ATMs.
A bank has installed devices on some of its devices that are intended to leave potential robbers rubbing their eyes, and possibly crying out in pain.
The Independent Online reported that one if its country’s largest banks, Absa Bank, has fitted nearly a dozen of its ATMs with pepper spray in hopes of stopping bombings and card skimmings.
However, the technology — which is in use in popular tourist areas — apparently still needs to be… tweaked.
According to the publication, pepper spray was inadvertently discharged during what was described as “a routine maintenance inspection.” Three people had to be treated, a bank spokesman told the Independent.
So if you’re ever in South Africa, please, be gentle with the ATMs.
