The circus is "history" that Bridgeport should leave behind. These people who train animals and work for the circus shame the very name of man, himself. When the earth as we know it ends, and they are called to reckon, there is a "special place" where they will be sent to.

Now that Webster Bank has taken the name of the Arena, why not move your accounts elsewhere, and tell them why?

Just saw a Fisher cat cross Route One in Guilford near the Branford town line. Stopped at the edge of the road, looked both ways, waited for me to pass, then crossed.

We must find safer ways to use wind farms. Estimates show that over the years, anywhere from 75,000 to 275,000 birds have been killed per year. These numbers are expected to increase as the number of wind farms grow.

The best form of recycling i've come across so far is via my chickens. I only have 3 but they eat all my veggie scraps and their bedding etc is superb for the garden, making for excellent veggies. My wife and I eat the vegg, the chickens eat the scraps......and the (re)cycle starts all over.

Excellent protest. Bridgeport needs to boycott this cruel sadistic show of irrational behavior. Use the money to enjoy a great meal in one of Bridgeport's spectacular restaurants. The mayor should ban the circus in Bridgeport.

this is a terrific post...very good points you make.

While wind turbines do pose a threat, it is one we must defeat. There is just too much available wind in the U.S. and if done right, there is enough out there to power the whole country.

The real opportunity in rolling out wind energy though is taking advantage of roofs and especially in cities where bird populations aren't as prevalent.

Hi, Dat Nurse, Hmm, I would not think cats, bigger than chipmunks and voles and with bigger teeth and claws, are easier prey for fishers. But the fishers are only trying to survive in their natural habitat,

we have lost 3 neighborhood cats to fisher cats...the domestic cats kept the chipmunk and vole populations in check...after they disappeared the vole and chipmunk populations exploded...seems the fisher cats like easier prey, like pets. their sound is bone chilling. our olny hope is it (or they) move on after they have eaten all the neighborhood pets, or that they now start on the chipmunks and voles! their sound is blood curdling. we live close to mass. border near stafford springs.

Hi. I have witnessed cruelty to elephants and other wild animals on telly. Recently i watched a programe about a circus elephant called Ann on BBC1 who has been performing in a circus for over 50 years. She was proper beaten by her trainer. It broke my heart. How anyone could beat any animal is behond me. I recently attended Blackpool circus, no animals performed, just humans, it was fantastic, the place was packed with crouds of people wanting to see humans perform various stunts and everyone loved. YOU DONT NEED TO SEE PERFORMING WILD BEASTS TO BE ENTERTAINED!!

Hi, Chris, You are not going to like my answer. I love cats and I do feel sorry for the stray ones. But the answer to your question is not to stop fishers living in their natural habitat. They are just trying to eat and survive. However, those multiple feral cat colonies that you are sustaining there in Groton will be an ever growing problem unless you get ALL those cats neutered or STOP feeding them. I know it will be hard for you to do that, but you are sustaining an unnatural colony. And all those cats are killing lots of birds in the neighborhood guaranteed. Nature is all about survival of the fittest naturally. What you are doing is upsetting the natural balance in that area: breeding cats, killing birds, increasing the population of fishers and other predators and encouraging weak, sick cats. Let nature take its course. Madeline

My boyfriend just called me and told me he spotted a fisher cat in Groton this morning at the ferel cat colony we feed. We have our own cats that we keep indoors but what can we do to protect our ferel cat colonies? Is there anything that fisher cats do not like that we can spread around our ferel cat colony to protect the kitties (garlic, onion, some kind of canned spray?) Please we would like to know as soon as possible!!!

I have patch where I grow my tomato plants and other veggies that's about 12 feet square. Every year I'd pull the plants out in the fall with some soil still clinging to the roots, and after a few decades of this the vegetable garden was turning into a noticable depression. I thought about buying bags of topsoil to fill it back up, but, being a might on the frugal side, I tried raking all my leaves on the spot to see what'd happen. By the next spring a five-foot-deep pile had been reduced down to maybe six inches by rain and snow, under which I found hundreds of happy worms. I dug this into the soil. My crop has been substantially improved ever since I started this practice.

Hi, Ree, Don’t know where you live, but wild animals have a place in even our urbanized environment. It always surprises me that people think only people belong in the neighborhood. I got lots of birds, ducks, opossums, skunks, red fox, coyote, raccoons, flocks of big turkeys, deer and a fisher cat, and feel they are an addition to the real coolness of my neighborhood in the biggest city in Connecticut. These animals are here to stay. When you say the fisher cat “struck” again, you mean it just woke you up twice, not attacked something, right!

Don’t know what woods you were running in, but almost all parks and towns require your dog to be on a leash, or at least under your control at all times, so the solution to your fear is to put your dog on a lease or train him. In most instances, the fisher cat should not bother you or your large dog, if you or your dog are not bothering it. But if your not too smart dog is approaching the fisher, it will defend itself. But statistics show you are quite likely to be attacked by your neighbor’s dog not a wild animal so you just cannot live your life in fear.

Well you are all very positive happy people about the reintroduction of the Fisher Cat but I am not. The scream is horrifying. It woke up everyone in my condo section about a month ago at 2:00am, then it struck again two weeks ago at 4:00 am. My dog was going crazy and I almost called the cops!!!
And just today at 3:45pm my dog took off after one in the woods. I was so scared for myself and my dog. Now after reading about them attacking people, I'm really nervous. Guess my twice a day runs in the woods with my dog will have to stop.
Will the Fisher attack a 90 pound mutt that isn't too smart?

Madeline,
Another great blog!
I believe that we've heard a fisher cat in Black Rock. We thought at first that we heard cats fighting or mating, but after hearing the sound bites on your links, I'm sure it was a fisher cat.

After seeing these guys in action, I'm writing Santa that I want a fisher cat for Christmas. Bridgeport is a tough town, and a guy needs a tough pet.

Saw a fox late one night sitting at the bottom of one of my trees in the front yard. It sat there looking up and all of a sudden a flash of black came shreiking down the tree and chased the fox in to the field. Sure it was a fisher cat. It was an amazing sight, although a bit unnerving !

Madeline,

I've never seen one in Black Rock but I have seen them here in Westport where I live.

The CT DEP did a great job with their re-introduction. They are a native wildlife species that have their place in our ecosystem.

Hopefully they can help to control white footed mice that contribute to the spread of Lyme Disease.

Great information about a sneaky creature. I have them around my property often....especially in the winter. The "scream" is blood curdling to say the least. I once watched an injured Fisher loping behind my barn through 2 feet of snow(where my compost pile is) and when I went out to check on the tracks I noticed that the tracks contained blood. It must of injured it's paw....very interesting.

Thank you for posting, Marie. It really does not matter what the relationship between circus management and the elephant owners and trainers is. The management IS responsible for what happens. I am sure there are elephant trainers who “love” their animals and do not physically abuse them, but it really is the concept of confining these very large wild animals that is the real abuse…i.e. chaining them up all day in concrete rooms, moving them in cramped trains, not allowing family groups to remain intact, not allowing them to run in large expanses, etc. etc. Elephants are not like dogs neither biologically, physiologically or psychologically. I think circuses are great, just not the ones that cage wild animals. Twenty counties and hundreds of cities have banned circuses that use animals for our entertainment, and more places will follow. And your last comment is like saying let’s chain the kids up in the basement so they won’t get hit by a car out in the neighborhood.

madeline,
with all respect to your article, you must know that it's not (in most cases) the circus that abuse the animals, but rather the trainers. Some circuses do own their own animals but for the most part, they hire people who own the animals outside of the company. not all trainers abuse their animals as well, which can be seen in many photos that you neglect to search for and put in your blog. Elephants especially love to be challenged and taught new things, just like dogs can learn tricks and enjoy it, elephants love the mental stimulation (and treats=) I myself traveled with a circus and met a family who kept the elephants very well, giving them exercise, bathing and playing with them. don't judge the circus and make them suffer instead find the owners and trainers that abuse their animals, just many people do in households across america everyday, and quit blaming the circus as a whole and giving it a bad name. one person does not represent the majority. also i would much rather an elephant be with a loving circus family than have them be poached and killed in the wild.

Carrie, Your post was very sad but important. Thank you. As you probably know there are great circuses that do not use animals. I don't know which ones travel out in MI but we have the Big Apple circus here in the Northeast that is lots of fun. I think they do use dogs and horses but that is a little bit different. Maybe a circus like that will come your way that you can take your sons to. Madeline

I'm 36 and just attended my first circus(Ringling Bros in MI, 11-10) with my husband and two young sons. We sat close in the second row. I had to walk out because my instinct told me these animals were abused. Seeing the elephants was like watching a group of slaves perform. The tigers and other animals displayed what I considered fearful posture and reaction to the trainers. If these animals were taught to perform with rewards, then why would they look so terrified of their own trainers, the people they spend most time with? Thank you for your article. I am trying to do what I can to educate people and write letters to help stop this abuse.

I attended my first protest last night outside of Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois and I was so disappointed to see peoples reactions to our silent protest. I had people yelling at me, ripping up literature (that they didn't have to take) and then disrecpectfully littering it in the nearby business parking lots and of course multiple people driving by giving us "the finger." But none of it mattered to me I plan on being out there every day that the circus is in town...all the way till the end of November. So please help spread the word to our upcoming protests on the corner of Mannheim and Lunt Rd. in Rosemont, Illinois. We will be there handing out signs and posters about 1 hour before the start of every show. Hope to see lots of new faces!

Deanna, Thank you SO much for your post. I think people's minds are changing slowly. Many countries and cities around the world are banning animals in circuses. You and your mom were brave. I hope their were some other protesters there too. My town bridgeport had protesters at the circus from PETA, In Defense of Animals and Friends for Animals too.
Madeline, thank you for your post educating the public that the price of Circus admission includes animal cruelty.

This past Sunday my mother and I stood outside the entrance to a Ringling Bros. Barnum Bailey Circus in my hometown of Rochester, NY holding signs in protest of their poor treatment of animals- specifically elephants. Our signs were not graphic. Mine was a R.I.P. with the names and dates of deaths of baby elephants that died during "training".

I was called an 'extremist' [really? for holding a sign?], was told I should 'help the homeless instead of wasting my time on elephants', and even a few people said 'oh come on... the circus doesn't hurt their elephants!' We were shouted and sneered at by many people as we silently held our signs. Most people passed by without a word.

What I learned on Sunday is that some people would rather believe that this cruelty is not happening than give up their beloved circus. I guess it's easier to deny it than to take action. My hope is that some of the people who silently read our signs will listen to their conscience, do a little research, and never attend a Circus with animal acts again.

And, by the way, I help the homeless too.

Thanks for this blog post, Madeline. In these modern times, surely we can appreciate that it's time for the circus to stop using outmoded and cruel animal acts to entertain the public. So your readers know, the protests continue throughout Ringling's stay in Bridgeport - we will be out there, informing the public about the lives of the animals being used in the circus. Anyone is welcome to join in:
Tonight (Friday) at 6pm
Saturday at 4:15pm
and Sunday at 2:45pm. Saturday and Sunday protests are between shows, so that we can provide information to people coming out of one and into the next. Thanks again!

Madeline,

Beautiful summary of what animals endure in the circus. We attended the protest last night and saw that circus attendance was way down from other opening nights. Thanks for educating people about this injustice and hopefully soon, the animals will be released to sanctuaries.

Pita:

My husband happened to be backstage at Madison Square Garden a few years ago for an event when the circus was also there. While walking to the dressing room, he did witness this behavior first hand and said he can never get it out of his head.
A "trainer" repeatedly hit an elephant with a large metal stick, who was just standing there, with a large rod while yelling and swearing at it among other things calling it "a stupid piece of shit". Is this the type of first hand account you were looking for?
Elephant abuse is real and pathetic. There is no need to have these animals in circuses.
I applaud Madeline for this article and raising awarness of this issue.

Pita, thank you for your comments. I know about PETA’s Virginia animal shelter issues. PETA has made no secret of its policy and has stated that euthanasia is sometimes necessary in a world full of unwanted pets. In regard to CT’s monk parakeets, even the CT Audubon Society called for serious management of these invasive birds. My blog, however, was not about PETA. Finally, one does not have to have first-hand knowledge of events to form an opinion. Everyone has the right to evaluate and interpret photos, videos and reports in their own way. I appreciate your earnestness and conviction.

Where was PETA when UI wanted to gas the parakeets in CT a couple of years ago? No where. I called all branches of PETA including the national headquarters and they said they would look into it which they didn't. State Rep. Tom Drew stepped in and help save those birds lives.

Madeline, did you photograph these photos yourself? Have you personally witnessed what is said here or are you taking PETA's word. The only way they get involved is if there is money to be made, they extort money from companies and this is just another example.

Want a dose of reality? Google "PETA Kills" and get ready for a horrifying example of do as I say not as I do.

Hi Madeline - thanks for the reply. Perhaps my words were poorly chosen as I didn't mean to offend you. Sorry about that. I enjoy stirring the pot and considering the possibility that things are not what we think they are or have been programmed to believe through things like social engineering and propaganda.

I like the change to your title. Frugality and simplicity are major tenets of my life so I am fully on-board with that. I have found that the more material possessions I get rid of and the less I consume - the better I feel and the quality of my life improves. Again, not switching but eliminating.

The health of our planet cannot and will not change until human beings change. We have lost our connection to the land - to our Mother, the Earth. The natural world has become nothing more than an abstraction in our modern way of living instead of the center of the universe as the natives refer to it.

Until we care about each element of the natural world (soil, water, animals, insects, plants, trees, etc.) the way we do our own family - because they are indeed our family - we are doomed. The quality of our life, and indeed life itself, rely upon all of them. No amount of science or technology will ever change that.

“Humans are not the only species on the earth, we just act like it.” ~ Dan Pirarro (Bizarro)

Keep up the good work and best wishes!

Thanks for your comments, Brock. I agree for the most part with your points. But I don’t think my little blog had a lot of “greenwash” as you call it. My blog article was about small ways to save money and energy at home and at work and also about natural things you could do in your yard for veggies and for animals. The title of my blog was meant to be kind of ironic, not literal… but I have changed it from “Easy Things To Do to Save the Planet” to “Easy Things To Do To Be Green.”

I agree completely that what we need more of is local, local, local. The centralization of our food supply, schooling, government, law enforcement, etc. is ruining the world.

However, I have to kindly disagree with your approach because it is really nothing more than the approach advocated by the corporate controlled propaganda machine we call the mass media.

Fear mongering - the selling of myths that widens the boundaries of panic and grows the markets for those who sell and deliver solutions.

Rarely does switching from product A to product B produce any measurable difference with regards to the environment but it sure does fatten the wallet of those who sell the over-priced solutions.

Green Products: Have You Been Greenwashed into Going Green?

By advocating the idea that making millions of little changes will amount to huge improvements is flat out wrong. If you are familiar with the Theory of Constraints, you will recognize these as false efficiencies. You may be making millions of little changes but the results will be as if you didn't change anything at all. Instead we should be focusing on the biggest constraint in our critical chain for improving our environment and fixing that instead!

And one of the biggest contributors to environmental destruction, animal cruelty, financial waste and chronic disease is factory farming. Ending factory farming would change our planet overnight.

Bird watching is a great sport! You sure can do it everywhere and at any time. Just recently I was mowing the field and was watching a huge hawk at the same time. It was beautiful. I have had so much fun bird watching since I started about 5 or 6 years ago.

Hello Madeline,

Great article on deer hunting and conservation. Wyoming also has a Sportsmen Against Hunger (SAH) Committee. Wyoming hunters donated 15,190 pounds of processed game meat to local charities in 2009. It's a great idea!

This is great! As a solar installer, we encourage our customers to make improvements in energy efficiency first and foremost. They will lower electricity bills and will require less solar panels to offset their usage. A lot of the ideas I may have heard before, but it's great learning about new ways to be more efficient!

Our tree trimming company just donated the use of our bucket truck to rescue an osprey that was tangled in a rope and hanging from its nest. I was shocked to find another blog article on osprey and bucket trucks. Keep up the good work!!

Hi Madeline,

Thank you for all of the suggestions & I'll be sure to check out the Reynolds Wrap next time I'm shopping. Speaking of shopping, for the past several years, I have used my own bags. I just keep them in the car so they are ready to go. Whenever I don't use them, I feel like I have walked into the store naked! But.... the reason I may not bring them to the store is because I sometimes use the bags as (small) garbage can liners, for cleaning up after my dog, or other miscellaneous uses. My auntie did this and they still sell the washable fabric bags you can hang under your sink or in a closet to store the bags. You can even make your own. Here is a link with some instructions: http://makeitandloveit.blogspot.com/2009/01/grocery-bag-holder.html

Lots of people have to take the bus, have to hang their clothes on a line, can't afford air conditioning and can't afford barbecued steak.

Maybe these activities will not only help the Earth, but help people appreciate how much they have compared to others.

Hi, Janice, I know that bald eagles are seen occasionally at the reservoir. They are about 30 inches from head to tail. Red tails are about 18 inches. It could have been a great-horned owl. They are about that size and rounder. Sometimes their "horns" are more flat against their head and not so prominent. Thanks for writing.
Hello,

In the reserviour the other day, I saw a very large bird on a low branch. I was hoping it was an owl, but as I got closer, I figured it had to be a hawk. I am still wondering as I have never seen a hawk so large or so fat. It seemed to be over 20-25" long and over 10 or so inches wide! I see Red tails all the time...including o the ground, but never this large or fat. Could it be a red tail digesting a larger rodent or something? I did not have my camera, but still wonder if it was some kind of larger hornless owl.

Thanks very much!

I think I am repeatedly seeing an ovenbird at my birdbath and warming itself in a Viburnum close by. A few days ago I saw it eat a holly berry. I don't think this bird should be here in Newtown, CT, this time of the year (late December). It is drab olive above with a white breast steaked with dark lines, pink legs, white eye ring and no wing bars. Sometimes, it flicks its tail. Any ideas or suggestions?

Madeline,

As an Arthur Street resident, I thank you for bringing this great aspect of nature to our little dead end street in Bridgeport. Those of us in Black Rock who love nature and love our neighborhood realize the effort and determination it takes to get anything of value accomplished in our sometimes backward and ignorant town.
I look forward to greeting our new osprey neighbors (whenever ther arrive) and was pleased to be a small part of making this happen.

You rock!

Madeline...very interesting and well thought out. While I am opposed to killing wildlife, you definitely give food for thought on the subject.

and I know a few late night skunks I would have second thoughts about...

Great article, Madeline! It's interesting to learn about how much terrific nature we have right here in overpopulated Fairfield County. These are the best links I've ever seen regarding Connecticut nature. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your future blogs.
