Donovan: O’Rourke Needs To Answer Some Public Questions

Friday January 30, 2009

Speaker of the House Chris Donovan told reporters a couple hours ago that Rep. Jim O’Rourke, D-Cromwell, who was the last person to see a 41-year-old woman alive before she was found dead of exposure in Rocky Hill last week, is going to have to answer questions from reporters about the incident.
He’s been cleared of foul play, but O’Rourke has been the talk of the Capitol all week.
“I think people want to know what’s on his mind and with him walking around, people have a lot of questions and maybe getting it over once might be the best way,” Donovan said.

Donovan Talks Tax Increases

Wednesday January 28, 2009

Amid the snow and sleet in Hartford this morning, Speaker of the House Chris Donovan appeared on WNPR’s “Where We Live,” talk-and-call-in show.
The first 20 minutes or so of the hour-long show with host John Dankosky, was spent performing another autopsy on the ill-fated hiring of Jim Amann to act as his senior advisor. Donovan said that the $120,000 salary seemed to be the biggest cause of public outcry. Then Donovan said that he didn’t think Amann understood that the job would take up more than an eight-hour business day.
From there, Donovan intimated the inevitable as the state confronts multi-billion-dollar deficit both in the current fiscal year that runs through June 30 and the two-year budget that the Legislature will be crafting to take effect July 1.
“THe wealthy as well as the average person needs to kick in,” Donovan said.
For those keeping score, the billion-dollar deficit of 1991 forced the 4.5-percent personal income tax. The deficit of 2002-03 resulted in an increase of the tax to 5 percent, after Democrats pushed for a so-called milliuonaire’s tax.

Amann Postpones Gubernatorial Announcement

Monday January 26, 2009

Democrat Jim Amann has decided to hold off his big announcement for governor until the fallout dies down over the $120K senior-advisory post for House Speaker Chris Donovan, from which he backed away last week.
Amann had booked the Klein in Bridgeport this week ,but has pushed it back to February 11, but Pat Scully, the former highly respected media guy for state Senate Democrats who was pushed out a couple years back by a Machiavellian tide of new Senate staffers, announced the date change today.
“We decided we needed some extra time to consider all the implications of the new state campaign finance laws including the proper disclaimers on printed material and a means to ensure lobbyists and contractors do not donate to the campaign as required by the new rules,” Amann said. “We are clearly being overly cautious by moving the date, but we wanted to be absolutely sure.”
Whatever,
.It’s not the backlash from the now-closed revolving House door that’s going to hit Amann, but rather the primary voters who remember Amann, a moderate Democrat, as a supporter of Joe Lieberman in 2006.
“Everywhere I go, the people of this state have turned out in far greater numbers than I ever expected,” Amann’s news release says. “The support I’ve received thus far from working families, from business leaders and from Connecticut citizens in general who are tired of politics as usual is very encouraging,” Amann said. “I look forward to the February 11th event. It’s going to very energizing and exciting.”
So mark your calendars for that Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Klein, 910 Fairfield Avenue in Amann’s native town of Bridgeport.

Dems Strike Blow For Obfuscation

January 22, 2009

It’s a few minutes after the Democratic-dominated Appropriations Committee adjourned, without discussion or a vote, on a pending raise for state engineers that will cost Connecticut $10 million. The inaction puts it on track to take place automatically in about 30 days.
Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield, and Sen. Dan Debicella, R-Shelton, ranking member of the committee, are in the Capitol Press Room now, at 5 o’clock, complaining about the opaque tactic.
“It is further evidence that the majority is unwilling to make the decisions necessary to get our economy running again,” McKinney said.”If they’re this unwilling to vote in committee, it makes me wonder why they ran for office in the first place.”
“This fails the test of bipartisanship,” Debicella said. “We expected to have a debate on it. It’s very early in the game to be acting partisan.”

Healy Wants Gaffey To Face Formal Inquiry

January 22, 2009

Chris Healy, the state Republican chairman, has called for a legislative Committee of Inquiry to investigate veteran Sen. Tom Gaffey, D-Meriden, who’s the subject of an active investigation by the State Elections Enforcement Commission over alleged misuse of a cellphone and double billing his political campaign and the Office of Legislative Management.
“Democrats set the bar for ethical standards and investigated a sitting Senator less than a year ago,” said Healy of the forced resignation of Lou DeLuca, a former Republican senator from Woodbury who left office in December 2007.
. “Now, they should look into Sen. Gaffey’s admitted acts of behavior unbecoming an elected leader – including possible fraud,” Healy said.
“Democrats were quick to judge and to hold Republicans accountable,”said Healy. “If they are truly committed to have lawmakers who follow the law, they should investigate Sen. Gaffey and pass judgment.”

Our First Presidential Disappointment: He Can’t Dance

January 21, 2009

The Blogster imagines that it was too much to hope for, but is he the ONLY one who noticed that the newly minted president seems to have spent his college weekends studying and not sashaying around the dance clubs?
It was painful to see President Obama at the Neighborhood Ball on TV, dancing entirely out of time. Ugh. At least the First Lady’s dress, which seemed rather constrictive, was an excuse.
