There may be neither a will nor a way to override Gov. Jodi Rell’s 13 vetoes, but the General Assembly will at least go through the motions next Monday, when they gather in the House and Senate. There is some eminently questionable stuff that majority Democrats could target for overrides, but because of the general disconnect between chambers, it’s less than likely. While the House majority of 114-37 is robust, the 24-12 Senate edge is nominal, at best. Still, the Blogster would like to see lawmakers tee off on her veto of legislation that would have expanded Off Track Betting to locations in Manchester and Willimantic. Her veto essentially means the death of two businesses. What makes her veto strange is that in two previous years, she approved such expansions to places including Milford.
One thing’s for sure next Monday, though. The General Assembly plans to meet in special session extend the real estate conveyance tax, which is set to expire July 1 without legislative action. A bill died of neglect in the waning minutes of the General Assembly session in May. It means at least $2 million for Bridgeport’s budget and legislative leaders have promised that the extension of the conveyance tax is a slam dunk.
