Nelson “Oz” Griebel of Simsbury visited the Southport Brewing Co. down there where Fairfield morphs into Westport and where Frank DelGreco, the manager/brewer, explained to him that a recent, sensible state law allows brew pubs like his to sell half-gallon jugs called growlers, to go. Griebel, who grew up in New Jersey and was unaware of the concept of growlers, recalled a summer job long ago in “quality control” at the old Ballantine brewery in Newark.
