Yikes! 8 p.m. Tonight is Deadline to Register to Vote. Election Closing In.

Here’s the news release:

“Hartford:  Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz today reminded Connecticut residents that time is running out to register to vote for the November 2nd General presidential election.  Connecticut residents have until today, October 26th, at 8:00 p.m. to register in person at their local Town Hall.

“This is it!  The deadline to register to vote in this most important election is tonight at 8:00 p.m.,” said Bysiewicz. “Registrars offices across the state of Connecticut will open up until the deadline to accommodate those last-minute voters who want to register before the election.  Don’t sit on the sidelines, make sure your voice is heard and that you have the opportunity to influence the direction of our state and our country.  I am urging all eligible Connecticut residents to register to vote, cast a ballot on Election Day, and make a difference.”

While the October 26, 2010 is the deadline to register to vote for the overwhelming majority of Connecticut residents there are several exceptions.  Anyone who moves within or into Connecticut after October 26th but before November 2nd can still register to vote in person at their local registrar of voters’ office.  Connecticut residents who become United States citizens between October 26th and November 2nd and Connecticut residents who become 18 years of age between that time also may register in person at their local registrars of voters’ office up until Election Day.

Secretary Bysiewicz is also reporting since the beginning of October, another 22,000 new voters have registered, making them eligible to cast ballots on November 2, 2010.  Since the beginning of the year, more than 76,000 new voters have registered to vote in Connecticut, including 25,691 Democrats, 15,320 Republicans, and 34,034 unaffiliated voters.

As of today, the total number of registered voters in Connecticut is 2,016,916.  The largest group of registered voters in Connecticut is unaffiliated, accounting for 839,126 voters.  There are 748,352 registered Democrats and 416,955 registered Republicans.

Polls will be open across Connecticut from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 2, 2010 for Election Day.  For information on how to register to vote, or to see where your polling place is or learn how to vote using the optical scan machines with paper ballots, visit www.sots.ct.gov
