It’s official. Veto-proof majority in House is bye-bye.

With Brenda Kupchick’s ouster of Rep. Tom Drew, D-Fairfield, in yesterday’s recount, the House minority will be a veto-override-busting 51, compared to 100 Democrats. That doesn’t quite have the clout of the former 114-37 Democratic majority and seems slightly academic, given that the next governor will be Democrat Dannel Malloy. But think about it. Malloy has to be more fiscally conservative that Speaker of the House Chris Donovan. If he cuts a budget deal with the 51 Republicans, all he needs is 25 Democrats, a mere quarter of the House majority, to reach the magic 76 to pass legislation.
