Rep. Toni Walker: New Haven cops, while racial profiling, are not aware of legislative license plates

The issue of racial profiling and the lack of adherence to a 2003 reporting requirement for statewide law-enforcement agencies, was part of a public hearing today in the Judiciary Committee. While explaining her own instance of racial profiling, Rep. Toni Walker, D-New Haven, indicated that the white New Haven cop who stopped her wasn’t aware of the legislative license plates, identifying her as a state lawmaker. “When the policeman pulled me over he wanted to know why was I driving through this neighbborhood and then he asked me what did my license plate stand for? I was dumbfounded. It terrified me and it terrified the ladies I had with me in the car because it was late at night, it was at about 8 at night, in the winter.”
