DRS arrests Bethel man on tax-fraud charges that he stole $12K. Penalties could fetch 55 years in the slammer

AGENTS ARREST BETHEL MAN FOR TAX FRAUD

 

Hartford — The Department of Revenue Services (DRS) today announced the arrest of a Bethel man for his alleged attempts to steal state income tax refunds. If convicted, he could face up to 55 years in prison.

On Thursday, August 11, DRS Tax Enforcement Agents arrested Michael R. Kish, 31 of Bethel for larceny in the first degree by defrauding a public community and seven counts of filing false state income tax returns.  

The arrest warrant affidavit, on file in the Hartford Superior Court, alleges that Michael Kish filed multiple false state income tax returns in his name and in other names attempting to steal tax refunds. He allegedly attempted to obtain more than $12,000 in fraudulent income tax refunds.

Kish was arrested by DRS Agents and transported to the Bethel Police Department for processing.  He was released after posting a $5,000 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in the Hartford Superior Court on September 1, 2011.

Larceny in the first degree is a class B felony punishable by imprisonment of up to 20 years, and a fine of up to $15,000, or both.  Filing a false tax return is a class D felony punishable by imprisonment of up to five years, and a fine of up to $5,000, or both for each count.
