Bill that would create state grand jury system goes bye bye

It is the deadline for action in the Judiciary Committee and House Bill 6698, a bill on grand jury reform, is not on the agenda, so the bill will die, yet again. The legislation would have given state’s attorneys the power to bring witnesses before a judge for closed-door inquisitions. It has been pitched as a way to help clear the state’s 1,000 unsolved homicides dating over the last 10 years and bring in witnesses who would not want to be seen speaking with investigators in public. But lawmakers have been concerned about possible misuses of the system by over-zealous prosecutors.
