HARTFORD – Senate Minority Leader John McKinney just requested a special legislative session to rewrite the 2011 state law that set the scene for the federal Affordable Care Act.
Citing that more people in Connecticut are losing coverage from carriers such as Anthem Blue Cross, than are gaining insurance under the so-called Obamacare, McKinney said that neither an executive order, nor a new regulation can gain Connecticut consumers the kind of relief that President Obama himself ordered Thursday in attempt to let people retain their health insurance.
McKinney, R-Fairfield, acknowledged he is a Republican candidate for governor, but he stressed that the issue transcends politics. He said the special session is needed because the 2011 law was a specific order. Without such action, any changes forcing insurers to retain tens of thousands of beneficiaries would be illegal under state law.
