Secy of the State Merrill gets new New Haven Mayor Toni Harp’s resignation from the state Senate, putting in motion Malloy’s upcoming writ of special election

This from Secretary of the State Denise Merrill:

” Senator Harp was elected Mayor of New Haven in the Municipal Elections Tuesday November 5, 2013 and was sworn into office as mayor on Wednesday January 1, 2014.  Under state law, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will have until January 17, 2014 to issue a Writ of Special Election to choose a successor to Mayor Harp to represent constituents in the 10th State Senate District.  That special election must be held within 46 days of the issuance of the writ of Special Election.

“I have received Mayor Harp’s letter of resignation from the State Senate effective today,” said Secretary Merrill, Connecticut’s Chief Election official.  “Toni Harp served more than two decades ably representing her constituents in New Haven and West Haven and we wish her good luck as she takes on her new role as Mayor of New Haven.  My office has notified Governor Malloy of her resignation from the State Senate.  As soon as the governor issues the Writ of Special Election, we will notify election officials in New Haven and West Haven when the special election will take place to choose the new representative in the 10th State Senate District.”

The 10th State Senate district covers parts of New Haven and West Haven.”
