Public Safety Committee pooch punts bill to allow towns to wait until June, 2015 to pay fringe benefits for resident state troopers

Sen. Kevin Witkos, R-Canton, went off on the Public Safety Committee today over SB 288, which would allow towns with resident State Troopers to hold off paying fringe benefits until June of next year. “This alleviates some of the unknowns,” said Sen. Joan Hartley, D-Waterbury, co-chairman, stressing that she and other legislative leaders did not want to raise taxes to cover it.”

“It’s a scheme,” Witkos said. “Now we’re giving you notice to pay up.” Rep. Janice Giegler, R-Danbury, ranking member of the committee, said the way resident state troopers are assigned to towns remains a major issue. “We really need to look at this further but we wanted to give the towns something.”
