State will delay emissions tests (for GM compacts involved in recalls) until October

The governor Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Melody A. Currey have announced an extension of the emissions testing dates for vehicles that are in the massive recall by General Motors.

“We understand that affected residents are already under enough stress dealing with the G.M. recall and don’t want to add to their burden.  Their first priority should be remedying their vehicles’ safety issues,” Malloy said in a statement. “We are extending emissions’ deadlines and waiving late fees to ease the pressure on Connecticut owners while they get through this extraordinary situation.” The motor vehicle giant has recalled about 2.2 million compact cars in the US that have been found to have to  defective ignition switches. “This is a serious problem and we want to help people as much as we can,” said DMV Commissioner Currey. “We see this effort as assisting these consumers as they work to get repairs done.”

The testing deadline has been extended for:

From Malloy’s office:

“The extension and waiver, which is effective beginning today (April 9th), apply to seven G.M. models and will remain in effect until October 31, 2014. Once the vehicle has been repaired, the emissions test must be completed. Anyone that fails to complete the emissions test by October 31th will be assessed with a late fee.  The extension and waiver apply only to emissions testing. Owners must renew their registrations on time and continuously maintain insurance to avoid additional late fees and penalties.”
