The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will sponsor and exploration into the art of Bonsai on Wednesday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby.

” Todd Hansen, a certified teacher of Bonsai, and Lydia Cruz from Bonsai Sanctuary in East Hartford will present the history and techniques of bonsai. The program includes a demonstration of how trees are shaped and groomed for exhibition as well as information on the art form itself. A variety of trees will be on hand to show styles and diversity of design, as well as tools of the trade to help show you what it takes to begin. Bonsai is an Asian art form as well as a horticultural activity. The trees used are grown in nursery settings and are large scale trees when they begin. The trees are collected when young and groomed in small pots to reflect the shape, texture and behavior of a natural landscape. Trees in some collections are decades old and worth hundreds of dollars. Creating the illusion of the full scale tree in miniature reflects the purposes of bonsai- contemplative for the viewer and pleasant ingenuity for the grower. Members of the New Haven Bonsai Society have provided a collection of trees available for viewing at the Kellogg Environmental Center before and after the presentation. You may visit the exhibit during operational hours of the center, Tuesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. July 5th through July 9th. The Kellogg Environmental Center is located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby, CT. Light refreshments will be served after the program. A donation of $5.00/ adult is requested.
