Former Shelton attorney faces criminal charges in theft of $150K

This from Chief State’s Attorney Kevin Kane:

“A former Shelton attorney was arrested today on charges that he stole more than $150,000 from clients and others who had dealings with his former law practice.

JOSEPH DeFILIPPO, age 52, of 20 Vista Drive, Shelton, was charged with one count each of Larceny in the First Degree and Forgery in the Second Degree. If convicted on these charges, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney into a complaint filed in March 2012 by the Office of the Chief Disciplinary Counsel in the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, investigators executed a search and seizure warrant for DeFilippo’s bank accounts, which documented thefts totaling more than $150,000.

DeFilippo was suspended from practicing law in April 2011 and resigned from the Connecticut bar in September 2011.

DeFilippo was released on a promise to appear for arraignment at Superior Court, G.A. No. 5, Derby, on October 9, 2014. The charges are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by the Statewide Prosecution Bureau in the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office.”
