CCAG hammers Republican budget

The atmosphere in the Capitol has been collegial this afternoon, following the release of the Republicans’ “Blueprint for Prosperity” budget. But here’s this slam from Tom Swan, executive director of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group, who has been focused on a bill that would penalize big chains for paying low wages.

  • “While we were encouraged that the Republicans acknowledged many of the proposed budget cuts to human services were unacceptable, we were more than disappointed at their continued political gamesmanship and failure to seriously address the underlying causes of our budget challenges – large, profitable corporations, like Walmart and McDonalds, paying their workers inadequate wages, thus relying on the state to subsidize their low pay,” he said in a statement. “
  • The Legislature is considering proposals to have these companies either pay their workers a worthy wage or to pay a fee to the state to offset our costs of their low wages.  These proposals would not only address the short term budget problems, but also place us on a path to greater long term stability.”
