Conservative ALEC sponsors reception today in Hartford

Vito’s the venerable restaurant on Hartford’s Bushnell Park, will be the site this afternoon of a reception for state lawmakers sponsored by the ultra-conservative American Legislative Exchange Council: “The American Legislative Exchange Council works to advance limited government, free markets and federalism at the state level through a nonpartisan public-private partnership of America’s state legislators, members of the private sector and the general public.” Here is the website: http://www.alec.org/about-alec/

The Blogster doesn’t expect many, or any, Democrats to join ALEC’s state leader, Rep. Whit Betts, R-Bristol and former national president Rep. John Piscopo, R-Thomaston, for apps and drinks with the leaaders of the 501(c)3 non-profit that is currently embroiled in a lawsuit over its tax-exempt status. But all lawmakers have been invited to the 5:30 p.m. event, so the good news for Capitol watchers is that if Republicans play nice today, maybe the majority leaders of the House and Senate will let them get out in time to network and nosh with ALEC.

Here is a copy of the email that Betts sent to all lawmakers:

“Good morning everyone.

The reception at which you can meet and talk with officials from the American

Legislative Exchange (ALEC) is now scheduled for this Thursday, May 7th from 5:30pm-7:00pm

at Vito’s Restaurant in Hartford. There is no charge to attend.

Rep. John Piscopo is the former National Chair of ALEC – the first official from CT to assume

this elected leadership positon. I am the current State Chair to ALEC.

Please RSVP by Wednesday so we can have a “head count” to give to Vito’s.

ALEC is a non-partisan policy driven organization based in Washington DC, and

provides opportunities for legislators to network with our peers around the country.

I hope to see you there.

Whit

Rep. Whit Betts

78th District – Bristol, Plymouth, and Terryville”
