In part 1, I talked about how “Spring Cleaning” is good for your health. Today I’d love to share some ideas on how to get organized.

10 ideas for taking control of the clutter!

  1. Take responsibility: Stop waiting for the “tidy-fairy” to visit your home, she ain’t coming! If it’s your mess, you need to do something about it.

  2. Take stock: Do a thorough audit of what needs to be done, by when and who needs to do it.

  3. Get clear:  Think about why you want to get organized, what’s stopping you, how you are going to get organized and who will help you.

  4. Take baby-steps: Break big tasks such as “tidy the kitchen”, “organize the closet” or “do taxes” into small tasks, doable in 15 – 30 minutes.

  5. Schedule: Writing a list of tasks to be done at a certain time engages the brain more. Checking off a task you have completed may give you a little boost of endorphins (happy hormones) and make you feel good and more motivated, even if only briefly.

  6. Develop healthy habits: Habits save you time and energy, but they take time to develop. Decide on a organizational habit to develop, such as “making the bed” or “sorting the mail as soon as I collect it” and then repeat, repeat, repeat.

  7. Get accountable: Arrange a dinner for friends, join a group online, ask a friend to be an accountability partner or hire a coach or professional organizer . You will be amazed how accountability overcomes procrastination.

  8. Be creative: Like me you may not be someone who ever really enjoys tidying closets or doing paperwork, so make it more fun: develop a music playlist for Spring Cleaning, watch TV on your laptop or ask a friend to join you to blitz a task.

  9. Set consequences and rewards: Sometimes we need a little bit of “carrot” or “stick” motivation, even when we are adults. A consequence might be “I don’t go on facebook until I have tidied the cereal cupboard” and a reward might be “when I have organized my closet I can buy new socks”.

  10. Donate to a good cause: It might feel easier to say goodbye to some of that “useful stuff” you haven’t used in six years, if you know it’s going to a good home: give to a thrift shop, drop in a charity bin or offer up as a freebie on Craigslist or Freecyle.
