Maya Moore set a conference record Monday when she was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the eighth time in 14 weeks this season. Former UConn All-American Rebecca Lobo had previously held the mark, receiving the honors seven times in 1991-92.
It was also the 80th time that a UConn player has been tabbed conference Freshman of the Week, easily the most in the conference. Providence is a distant second with 34.
Maya averaged a team-high 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in wins over Georgetown and Pittsburgh last week. She has scored in double figures in all 25 games and has scored at least 20 points in nine games (tied 4th Big East).
Maya currently has scored 438 points, the third highest total by a UConn freshman. She needs seven to pass Tamika Williams (444, 1998-99) and 19 to pass Tina Charles (456, 2006-07) to move into second place.
Svetlana Abrosimova set the team freshman record with 538 points in 1997-98.
Incidentally, the Huskies are 0-for-14 when it comes to having a player named Big East Player of the Week this season.
