She should have been arrested and prosecuted for assault and battery. It’s unconscionable for anyone to beat another human being and get away with it simply because it happens in the hockey rink, on a playing field, or on a basketball court. It’s criminal, and vicious assaults with hockey sticks in the NHL, or vicious assaults like Griner’s on a basketball cour, which appears to have broken the other player’s nose, should be treated like the criminal actions they are.
It was the horrific punch by Kermit Washington in the NBA that resulted in brain fluid leaking into the assaulted player’s nasal cavity that precipitated the NBA’s instituting very strict punishments for fighting. Griner’s assault on the Texas Tech player should result in the stiffening of rules in the NCAA.
In no other situation in society would anyone be excused for beating another person; it shouldn’t be excused in sports.
