Bird, Taurasi Talk UConn Connection

by:

The U.S. is 5-0 and will meet South Korea in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIBA World Championship Friday in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic at 9:30 a.m. (NBA TV). Half of the 12-member team has ties to UConn, including three-time first team All-American senior Maya Moore.

Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones and Diana Taurasi were each members of the 2002 Huskies that won the national championship and finished 39-0. Tina Charles and Moore helped lead the Huskies to back-to-back national championships and 78 straight wins in 2008 and 2009.

During a teleconference this afternoon both Bird and Taurasi spoke about teaming with Charles and Moore.

“It’s great to play with people who I haven’t played with in a long time since college,’’ Bird said. “It’s great to play with players like Maya and Tina who I never played with in college. But we have the same roots and the background’s the same and a lot of the things that are core are the same. We play similarly. We see things the same and it’s been a real treat to be on the court with those guys.’’

Said Taurasi: “It’s really cool because being able to watch Tina and Maya throughout their college careers and to be on the court with them you see why they’ve been so successful, how hard they work. And they’re really not only great players but really good people. And it’s been nice to be on the court with them and to share these moments. It’s been a special moment.’’

Here’s one more line delivered by Taurasi during the half-hour session … “You’ve got to prepare like the underdog,’’ she said. “The minute you think you can’t be beat that’s when they come up from behind and get you. So I never feel like the overdog. You’ve just got to keep barking.’’

Maya, U.S. Win Opener

by:

Senior Maya Moore had seven points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 22 minutes to help the U.S. to an easy 99-73 victory over Greece today in its first game at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

“This is difficult, coaching in the World Championship because first, you’re not coaching the University of Connecticut where only the people in Connecticut care,’’ Team USA/UConn head coach Geno Auriemma said during his postgame remarks. “Now you’re coaching the United States, where everybody in America cares. So, it’s much different, much more difficult. I was probably more nervous before this game than I was before the national championship game last year.’’

Swin Cash led the team with 16 points, six rebounds three assists and three steals in 23 minutes. Tina Charles added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in a team-high 27 minutes. Diana Taurasi added eight points, while Sue Bird had six points and six assists.

The U.S., which shot 55.7 percent from the field, will meet Senegal Friday in its second preliminary round game at noon (NBA TV).

Here are Geno’s thoughts on Maya’s performance:

“Maya looked like a college player tonight playing against experienced professionals,’’ he said. “She got lost a little bit a couple of times on the floor. She’ll adjust to that. She’s a smart player. Defensively and those sort of things, when you’re young and you play against two experienced players like Greece has, they’re going to take advantage of you. And they did, but she’ll be better tomorrow night.’’
