Coach Geno Auriemma said today that he was extremely impressed by Diana Taurasi’s cover shot in the current ESPN The Magazine (The Body Issue) where she is sitting naked in the fetal position. She is also pictured inside lying naked on a basketball.
“I think she looked great,’’ Auriemma said. “I think it was tremendous, one of the best pictures I’ve ever seen of a female athlete. And anybody that saw Diana as a freshman in college and even as a senior in college would be unbelievably impressed and proud, especially those of us around here at how hard she’s worked to get herself in that kind of physical condition.
“I was with her a whole month (with the U.S. National Team). And she’s the quickest I’ve ever seen her. She’s more explosive than I’ve ever seen her. She’s a pro now. She’s not a college kid eating seven meals a day because you’re bored and you don’t know what to do. She’s a pro. She treats herself like a pro, acts like a pro, works out like a pro. When I saw that picture I was like, `Hell, yeah, man.’ I’m really happy for her.’’
Auriemma was also asked if he thought any of his current players would have the courage to follow Taurasi’s lead and pose for the magazine.
“I don’t think anybody’s got the (moxie) to do it,’’ Auriemma said. “Rebecca (Lobo) asked me if I was going to be on the cover of it and I said they would need more balls. And she said, `And bigger balls.’’’
