There was some doubt whether or not freshman Breanna Stewart would be able to play tonight against Holy Family. She injured the bottom of her right foot against Indiana University (Pa.) Nov. 2 and did not practice Monday or Tuesday.
Not only did she play tonight, but she started and provided further proof of why the hype surrounding her is so high. Stewart totaled a game-high 21 points (7-of-14 FG; 2-of-4 3-pointers), four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in a game-high 25 minutes.
“It was kind of like I guess a game-time decision, just because of the swelling,’’ Stewart said. “But the swelling really went down a lot today so I was very happy because I wanted to play. I was happy with how it felt.’’
Stewart, who was wearing a walking boot on her foot following the game, averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals in 24.5 minutes in two exhibition games.
“I wear this (boot) as a precaution,’’ Stewart said. “It feels a lot better, actually, because it was really swollen and tight and harder to move. But the swelling has gone down a lot. So I’m happy with it.’’
