Geno Auriemma UConn Leadership Conference Launched Today

The UConn School of Business and UConn coach Geno Auriemma announced today the establishment of the Geno Auriemma UConn Leadership Conference during a news conference at the School of Business. The event will be held April 29 and 30 at the Mohegan Sun Convention Center in Uncasville.

“It’s not just a Geno Auriemma, women’s basketball, UConn athletics, UConn School of Business event,’’ Auriemma said. “This really is a community event that I think will galvanize the entire university and will benefit the entire university.’’

Said UConn president Susan Herbst: “I think Geno has done more for women’s collegiate athletics than almost anybody in the country, almost anybody in American history. So he does that and then he is an ideal typical university citizen. He’s engaged with the rest of the university. He’s an intellectual. He helped pick a campus book last year. He’s everywhere. We’re blessed to have a coach who is so much more than a coach and so much of a leader for this higher education institution.’’

The keynote speakers for the event will be Walmart President/CEO and UConn alum Bill Simon and Nike President Charlie Denson. The number of registrants will be limited to 150.

“This isn’t a money-making venture for Geno Auriemma,’’ Auriemma said. “As you know in the media, I already make more money than I deserve. But, then again, if you spend your life with 12 women under the age of 22 I’m not making nearly as much as I should. So you have to understand this is not a money-making venture for me. That’s not why I’m doing it. I’m not getting a dime out of this operation. Whatever profits we do generate is going to go directly into the School of Business for whatever purposes they feel fit to use. Whether it’s scholarships or whether it’s resources or facilities or whatever it is that the School of Business thinks will help them. I’m not doing this as another way to get publicity for me or to enhance my reputation in the world or make any money that benefits me personally.

“I have a speaking role and I will be involved in the entire event from the beginning to the end.’’
