Mosqueda-Lewis Questionable For Game Vs. Penn State Thursday

by:

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was able to take part in some functional drills, which included cutting, stopping and starting and changing direction, and get in some shooting during practice today at Gampel Pavilion. She is listed as questionable for Thursday’s game against No. 10 Penn State as she continues to deal with a left quadriceps contusion.

A final decision on whether or not Mosqueda-Lewis will play is not expected to be made until after shootaround Thursday. Shootaround normally ends about four hours before tip-off.

“I think the official medical pronouncement is questionable,’’ UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “I saw her this morning and she looked pretty good. I saw her this afternoon and she shot the ball a little bit and she looked pretty good. We’ll see how she feels when she wakes up tomorrow and see how she looks at shootaround and then we’ll probably make that decision right then and there.’’

Mosqueda-Lewis was injured during the first half of Monday’s 63-48 win over No. 9 Maryland at the XL Center. She left the game for good with 2:45 left in the half, finishing with seven points in 13 minutes.

Should Mosqueda-Lewis be unable to play against Penn State it would be the second time in three games she would be sidelined. She missed the game against Colgate Nov. 28 after sustaining a concussion against Purdue at the Paradise Jam Nov. 24.

“That’s the price you pay when you’re a really good player,’’ Auriemma said. “I remember Diana. Nobody got beat up more than Diana Taurasi when she was here. And it goes with the territory. If you’re going to be a really good basketball player you’re going to have to take the hits and you’re going to have to give some. That’s what basketball is. It’s not the NBA 3-point shooting contest. So those things are going to happen. They happen to everybody.’’

Fans Tuning In To Watch Huskies On SNY

by:

There were plenty of fans who were uncertain exactly what the switch to SNY would mean this season. To this point, the switch from CPTV has been met with success.

SNY announced today that television ratings for the UConn women’s basketball team have increased 14% in the Hartford-New Haven DMA. The network is averaging a 5.14 household rating through the first five games of the season as opposed to the first five regional telecasts that aired last season.

SNY’s highest household rating was 5.86 when the Huskies faced Marist at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands Nov 23.

Auriemma Hopeful Mosqueda-Lewis Will Play Vs. Penn State

by:

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis has already been forced to miss one game this season with a concussion. UConn coach Geno Auriemma is hopeful that she will not have miss Thursday’s clash with No. 10 Penn State at Gampel Pavilion after suffering a left quad contusion against No. 9 Maryland Monday.

Mosqueda-Lewis was injured in the first half of UConn’s 63-48 win over the Terrapins, leaving the game with 2:45 left in the half. She did not play in the second half.

Whether or not Mosqueda-Lewis is able to practice today will provide a solid gauge as to whether or not she will be able to play tomorrow against Penn State. The Huskies are scheduled to workout at Gampel Pavilion from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“(The basketball gods) punish you when you do dumb stuff,’’ Auriemma told Bob Joyce Tuesday on his weekly spot on WTIC-AM 1080. “She caught it earlier in one of our possessions and she drove it left, went in there and scored. This time she catches and she wants to fool them and she goes right, right into four of them and got all smashed up. And got hit in the exact same knee she got hit in right before the Texas A&M game, just in a different spot. So apparently she came through it pretty well. (Tuesday) she looked pretty good. She didn’t practice, but we’re going to see if she can go (today) and if she can then hopefully we’ll have her for Thursday night.’’
