Dolson Returns For Huskies; Tuck Sits; Jefferson’s Chance

Junior center Stefanie Dolson was back to her usual self today, joking around and making plays during practice at Gampel Pavilion.

Dolson missed the first game of her career Saturday at St. John’s due to a stomach ailment. She will be back in action Tuesday night when the Huskies host Marquette at Gampel Pavilion.

“Stefanie’s been great,’’ UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “Yesterday she was just a tad off. But today you would never know anything happened.’’

Said Dolson: “It was tough (missing the game). It was weird. It was really bizarre. You just kind of feel helpless because you can’t help the team. It was tough for me to just sit there and not get in.’’

Dolson said that the issues with her stomach were caused by something she ate Friday at dinner (steak, a lot of cream spinach, French fries). She wanted to at least try to go through warm-ups Saturday at Carnesecca Arena before making a final decision on her playing status.

“I’m a baby,’’ Dolson said. “That was my thing … Go through warm-ups, see how I felt. And it was off. It didn’t feel right. I don’t know what it was. It wasn’t the flu. My stomach was like churning and cramping. It was awful.

“My mentality was I didn’t want to be a detriment to my team. So I pulled myself out and my stomach just wasn’t feeling right and I don’t know how much help I would’ve been out there. So I just told the coaches that I couldn’t play.’’

Freshman Morgan Tuck, who continues to be bothered by a bone bruise in her right knee, did not practice Sunday or today. Auriemma said that she will play against Marquette.

“Morgan Tuck didn’t practice today or yesterday,’’ Auriemma said. “Why? Because she’s walking into the building yesterday and slips on a piece of snow and her knee acts up. Same spot, don’t get me wrong. Nothing different.’’

Freshman Moriah Jefferson will be asked to fill the void left by the season-ending knee injury to Brianna Banks.

“First of all, I don’t even know if I want to look at it that way just because of the fact that she went down,’’ Jefferson said. “Nobody wants anybody to get hurt. But, at the same time, it happened and it’s here. So I think it is an opportunity for me I guess because now it’s another guard down. Bri can’t be there to step up so I have to step up for her and my teammates.’’
