Curtis Ekmark of St. Mary’s High School has been named the WBCA National High School Coach of the Year, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced today. Ekmark’s daughter, Courtney, has made an oral commitment to play for UConn.
Ekmark led St. Mary’s to a 29-1 record and its third Arizona Interscholastic Association state championship this season. The Knights, who outscored the opposition by 33.5 points, are ranked No. 3 in the USA Today High School Sports Super 25 Poll.
Ekmark is a combined 154-21 (.880) during his six-year tenure at St. Mary’s, including a 30-0 finish last season when the Knights won the state 5A-1 championship.
“Curtis is a well-deserving recipient of the WBCA National High School Coach of the Year award,’’ WBCA CEO Beth Bass said. “The WBCA takes great pleasure in recognizing those who commit themselves to the development of the future of women’s basketball. Curtis has done an exceptional job of getting his team to push itself above and beyond expectations.’’
