The Catholic 7 – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, and Villanova – are poised to break away from the Big East at any moment it seems. They might even take the conference name with them.
Here are the thoughts of UConn coach Geno Auriemma on the mass departures that loom …
“Anytime you get those kind of changes and you lose something that’s special, of course, it bothers you,’’ Auriemma said. “It bothers you because not only do you lose a lot of tradition and a lot rivalries, but a lot of your friends, a lot of people that you enjoy spending time with at the Big East meetings or just in general you don’t get to have those relationships any more as much as you did. Obviously, change is part of it and you have to deal with it but that doesn’t make it any easier.’’
Auriemma said that he does not foresee the conference upheaval having any impact on the Huskies.
“We can still play all of those guys if we wanted to,’’ Auriemma said. “So that doesn’t change anything.’’
