UConn senior Kelly Faris is one of three finalists for the WBCA Division I Defensive Player of the Year award, it was announced today. She is joined by Baylor All-American Brittney Griner and Stanford All-American Chiney Ogwumike.
The Defensive Player of the Year award honors the best defensive collegiate Division I women’s basketball player. All Division I conference defensive players of the year are eligible to be nominated for the award, and a selection committee makes the final decision on the winner. If a conference does not select a defensive player of the year, the conference representative can nominate one player to be considered.
Faris further proved herself defensively in the regional semifinals against Maryland Saturday when she primarily held All-American Alyssa Thomas to a 4-of-16 shooting performance from the field. Thomas was a combined 6-of-28 in two games this season against Faris and the Huskies.
