Groundbreaking Ceremony For Basketball Facility Set For Tuesday

UConn will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony for the UConn Basketball Development Center Tuesday at 1 p.m. The facility, which is slated to open next year, is being built on the former site of Memorial Stadium. The ceremony will take place in a tented area near the old Stadium Facilities Building.

UConn President Susan Herbst, Director of Athletics Warde Manuel, head women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, head men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie and selected men’s and women’s basketball players will take part in the ceremony.

The 78,200 square foot facility, which is estimated to cost $35 million to build, will feature practice gyms for the men’s and women’s basketball programs that will consist of one full size court and two half courts per team and a dedicated free-throw shooting basket to equal eight goals per practice court, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and areas for academic support, video analysis, sports medicine and strength training.

  1. Mayor McCheese says:

$35 million for a basketball practice facility that a small handful of UCONN students will ever see the inside of. Those that do use it will likely either transfer or leave early to play pro ball. This does nothing to enhance the academics at UCONN which are sorely lacking compared with other state universities.

Maybe they should have spent the money on endowing some academic chairs, providing more merit scholarships to attract higher caliber students, building new labs or academic buildings, etc.

Even if this is donated money, the donors are tone deaf to what UCONN really needs. they ave been steered by the administration to build vanity projects like this center instead of focussing on improving academics at UCONN.

What a waste of our tax dollars.
