UConn incoming freshman Saniya Chong, a 5-foot-9 guard from Ossining, N.Y., has been named the 2012-13 Parade All-American Team’s Girls Basketball Player of the Year, it was announced today. Rebekah Dahlman (Vanderbilt), Diamond DeShields (North Carolina), Kianna Holland (Duke) and Tori Jankoska (Michigan State) were the other finalists for the award.
Chong, who was named a WBCA All-America, averaged 34.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists, 4.8 steals and 2.0 blocks this season at Ossining High. She led the Pride (22-5) to the state Class AA championship, the first state championship in team history.
Chong finished her career with 2,988 points, setting the state Section 1 scoring record. She is ranked fourth all-time in state history in scoring.
