UConn will face California in the Maggie Dixon Classic Dec. 22 at Madison Square Garden in a battle of 2013 Final Four participants. The Huskies have not played in the event since defeating Ohio State to earn their then-record-tying 88th straight win Dec. 19, 2010.
Former Big East rival St. John’s will meet Texas A&M in the first game of the doubleheader (11 a.m.). Now in its eighth season, the event honors Dixon, the former Army coach who died suddenly of heart arrhythmia April 6, 2006 at the age of 29.
UConn, who will be making its third appearance, will be facing California during the regular season for the first time since Dec. 28, 1994 and for the fourth time overall (2-1). The teams last met in the NCAA Trenton regional semifinals March 29, 2009.
