UConn To Bid To Host 2014 NCAA Subregional

The Huskies are no strangers to hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament at Gampel Pavilion. UConn senior women’s administrator Deb Corum said that UConn will bid to do so again in 2014.

UConn has hosted the first two rounds at Gampel Pavilion 14 times (1994-2003; 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013). The opening rounds were also held at the XL Center in 2007 and at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport in 2004 and 2012.

Despite the passing of a rule earlier this year permitting a school to host a regional on its home court, the Huskies will not bid.

“The reason for that being we’re opposed to institutions being able to host regionals on their home site,’’ Corum said. “So it would be disingenuous to say we’re opposed to that and then bid for it. We’re hoping that there will be someone else in the state of Connecticut or nearby that will bid for a regional. Maybe we’ll be able to stay close by. We’d like to do that for our fans.’’

The host sites for the 2014 first and second rounds and regionals are expected to be announced Oct. 7.
