UConn Class of 2015 target Katie Lou Samuelson and the U.S. women’s 3×3 team have reached the quarterfinals of the FIBA 3×3 U-18 World Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia. The U.S. (5-1) will face France Sunday at 5 a.m. EDT.
The semifinals are scheduled for 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. EDT, while the gold medal game will be played at 10 a.m. EDT. Samuelson is joined by California commit Gabby Green, Arike Ogunbowale, who recently had a home visit with UConn, and Notre Dame commit Brianna Turner.
The U.S. suffered an 11-9 loss to Lithuania today, but it earned a 14-11 win over Spain to complete preliminary round play in Group B. The U.S. then defeated Thailand 21-14 in the knock-out round of 16.
Here are some comments from Samuelson (courtesy of USA Basketball) …
On loss to Lithuania
A: “We definitely struggled. I think we just came out feeling too comfortable from the day before and we just couldn’t hit any shots. Lithuania came out playing really hard, we’re lucky it came in pool play so that we have another chance because it really helped us get better and realize what we have to do.
On win over Spain
A: “We were really pumped to come out for that game because we had just lost and we were ready to play. We knew that once we got halfway through we could do this if we kept playing the same way we were. Our defense was really good and we played overall really well.
On win over Thailand
A: “It was definitely better and we’re getting back to how we played in D.C. (at the FIBA Americas Championship) and I think we’re going to do pretty well tomorrow if we keep playing that way. Tomorrow we have to come out from the very beginning really hard and we need to rebound better and play better defense.”
On playing 3×3
A: “I love 3×3. It’s awesome and it’s really fun to play. It’s really fun to be playing outside, there’s music playing, it’s a lot more fun to me than five-on-five.’’
