UConn Class of 2015 targets Katie Lou Samuelson and Arike Ogunbowale helped lead the U.S. women’s 3×3 team to the gold medal today at the FIBA 3×3 U-18 World Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia. The U.S. defeated Estonia 20-12 to win the championship for the second straight year.
“We started off really well,’’ Samuelson told USA Basketball. “Estonia played hard, but we really kept a face paced game and I think we tired them out and we kept going with our intensity and it really helped.’’
The U.S. (8-1) beat France 17-15 in the quarterfinals and Spain 15-10 in the semifinals to reach the final. By winning gold, the U.S. qualified for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
“We knew we had to come out hard and if we played the way we did against Spain the day before (in preliminary round play) we knew we could win it,’’ Samuelson said regarding the game against France. “So we just came out and played as hard as we could and we just wanted this and we played really well.’’
Samuelson and Ogunbowale were joined by California commit Gabby Green and Notre Dame commit Brianna Turner.
