Geno Goes Back In Time To UConn’s Last Season Opening Defeat

|

The Huskies have won 18 straight season openers dating back to an 83-81 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Nov. 19, 1995. Hartford coach Jennifer Rizzotti was the starting point guard for the Huskies that season.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma took a moment today to reminisce …

“(Nykesha Sales) made a couple free throws to send the game into overtime,’’ Auriemma said. “And we lost. Then (Louisiana Tech coach) Leon Barmore ran into the locker room without shaking my hand because he thought he won a national championship on Opening Day. They all jumping up and down. They had a celebration. I’m standing there. I’m waiting for the guy. I’m like, `Alright, he’s going to come over and shake my hand. He just won a game.’ So I’m walking towards him and I can’t find him. The place is mobbed and everybody’s on the floor.

“So I went to his locker room and I said, `Yo, Leon.’ He goes, `Oh, ooh, ooh, I’m sorry. I’m sorry.’ I’d never seen anyone like that before in my life.’’
