The 2002-03 and 2003-04 national championship teams will be inducted into the Huskies of Honor prior to UConn’s game against Cincinnati at Gampel Pavilion Dec. 29.
Here is what Coach Geno Auriemma had to say about what the Huskies were able to accomplish under the leadership of All-American Diana Taurasi en route winning back-to-back national championships.
“That’s an amazing thing that that group did when you think about it,’’ Auriemma said. “I know the ‘27 Yankees were supposedly the greatest team in the history of baseball, but this will be like if all the guys from the ’27 team left except Babe Ruth and brought in a whole bunch of new guys and they won it again the next two years. That would be pretty amazing. And that’s kind of what happened. The best team ever to play (2001-02), they all left except Babe Ruth (Taurasi) and she was able to take a bunch of normal guys and win two titles in a row. I don’t know that you’ll ever see anything like that ever happen again.’’
Like Ruth, Taurasi also wore No. 3.
