Breanna Stewart is one of four finalists for the Naismith Trophy, it was announced today by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. She is joined by Kayla McBride of Notre Dame, Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford, and Odyssey Sims of Baylor.
The finalists were chosen by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s National Voting Academy, which determined that the player performances throughout the 2013-14 regular season stood out among a host of great women’s basketball players. The award will be presented in Nashville, Tenn. April 7.
Stewart is looking to become the sixth UConn player to win the award, joining Rebecca Lobo (1994-95), Sue Bird (2001-02, Diana Taurasi (2002-03, 2003-04), Maya Moore (2008-09, 2010-11) and Tina Charles (2009-10).
“What’s impressive about these four finalists is that each of their teams is among the best in the country, so in addition to them achieving individual accolades, they all are strong team leaders,’’ said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. It’s anyone’s award to win, and we’re looking forward to watching it play out during the tournament.’’
