UPDATED: Fairfield BB vs. Top 25 opponents … there’s a win!

|

Over the past couple of weeks, since I initally put out this list of Fairfield against Top 25 opponents, several of you brought up the Stags’ 123-103 win over Holy Cross in the 1977-78 season. Now, originally, when I went through the Crusaders official media guide and checked out their past seasons, there was no ranking number next to Holy Cross when they faced the Stags on Jan. 21 at Alumni Hall, meaning they were not ranked.
However, I checked (as did numerous Stag fans) an historic AP poll website that shows each and every poll dating back to 1948 when the Associated Press first started doing the Top 20 poll. When the Jan. 17, 1978 poll came out, Holy Cross was ranked 14th in the country. When the Jan. 24 poll was released, the Crusaders were not ranked. Holy Cross and Fairfield played Jan. 21 — before the new poll was announced — meaning when they played, the Crusaders were ranked 14th.

So …

here’s the updated list …
And if anyone else can think of one that I missed, drop me an e-mail at celsberry@ctpost.com

Ray, I did check. Fairfield defeated Boston College 100-93 on Dec. 7 1965. That year the Eagles went 21-5, but as far as the AP poll goes, only 10 teams were ranked in the poll at that time (they only ranked 10 between 1961-68). BC was not in the Top 10

Chris check the 1966 ( I think} Fairfield @ BC game. I think it was BC first game of the season and BC was a pre-season top 25 pick Cousey was the coach and the stags upset the eagles at the Roberts Center.

That 1978 game against Holy Cross was one of the greatest games I ever saw in person. It was well over capacity, I know at least five of us snuck in that night. The atmosphere was electric. That is the reason they need an on campus venue with about 3,500 seats and when they attract larger competition such as Providence or UCONN they would play them at the Webster Bank Arena as the big guys are not playing away games in a campus atmosphere. A true HOME COURT advantage for league games and to get the fan base going.

    Chris,

Below is a link that shows the AP polls from the beginning of time. The Fairfield-HolyCross 123-105 game was on 1/21/78. HC was ranked 14 in the 1/17/78 poll.

According to the SID at Holy Cross, the Crusaders were ranked 14th the week before. They dropped out of the top 20 just before playing the Stags.

In 1977-78, the Fairfield Stags had a 123-108 victory over the then 14th ranked Holy Cross Crusaders.
