Stags’ Newsom on Rhode Island College short list

|

While all is currently quiet on the Fairfield front, I’m hearing rumors that Stags associate head men’s basketball coach Tony Newsom is seriously in the running to become the new head men’s basketball coach at Rhode Island College.
I was told that Newsom, who has been with Stags head coach Sydney Johnson for the last three seasons at Fairfield and four years before that at Princeton, recently took an campus visit and interviewed for the position.
Newsom has 19 seasons of coaching experience with Fairfield. Princeton, Holy Cross, Rider and Siena and played four years at Niagara University, helping the Golden Eagles achieve an NIT berth as a senior.
The Rhode Island College Anchormen, is a Division III institution located in Providence, R.I., is looking to replace Bob Walsh, who was hired as the new head coach at the University of Maine on May 4. Walsh led RIC to eight straight 20-plus win seasons.
