Fairfield officials are asking that town residents and businesses observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday declared by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to honor the 26 victims of the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown a week earlier.
The day has been proclaimed a statewide Day of Mourning by the governor in tribute to the memory of the 20 first-graders and six educators killed at the school.
As part of the tribute, the bell at Fairfield’s old Town Hall on Old Post Road will be rung 26 times, a chime for each of the victims.
Malloy also has asked that houses of worships ring their bells 26 times.
The governor has written a letter to the governors of the other 49 states to ask that they also join Connecticut in observing the Friday moment of silence.
