Ahoy Mate! It’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Pirates of the CaribbeanArrrgh! It’s International Talk Like A Pirate Day…when mature adults are encouraged to babble like a buckaneer.  The scurvy tradition began when two swashbucklers, John Baur and Mark Summers, came up with the idea over a game of that old pirate favorite, racquetball, back in 1995.  But it  wasn’t until columnist Dave Barry mentioned it in a 2002 story that the idea took off like gangbusters, and just like that, Talk Like a Pirate Day spread around the globe.  Today, scallywags in more than 40 countries celebrate this holiday!

To get you landlubbers off to a good start, I’ve compiled a list of common pirate words and phrases to impress the lads and lasses in your life.  Don’t worry if you forget these terms, just give a good, hearty “Yarrrr!”

Aye- yes

Ahoy, me harties! – Hello, my friends!

Avast ye varmint – Stop right there young man because you’re in big trouble.

Blimey! - exclamation of surprise

Head - toilet

Shipshape - cleaned up and under control

Shiver me timbers! - comparable to “Holy Crap!”

“Weigh anchor!” – Let’s go!

Ye - you

Yo Ho Ho - cheerful exclamation
