“Winter Vacation Adventures” For Kids At The Maritime Aquarium

“Winter Vacation Adventures” For Kids At The Maritime Aquarium

Children 6 to 12 years old can make snowflakes, rockets and otter toys, set up a real salt-water aquarium and lots more in special programs during the upcoming school vacation Feb. 20-24 at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. The Maritime Aquarium’s “Winter Vacation Adventures” invite young students to explore our watery world each day of the school break.  For ages 6 to 9, there’s a different topic each day. Sign up for one, some or all five. Ages 9 to 12 can take part in the five-day “Junior Marine Biologist” class. Program hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Taking into account parents’ busy schedules, the Aquarium is offering pre-care from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. as well.

For ages 6 to 9:

The daily schedule and topics are:

Monday, Feb. 20  –  “Making Sense”  Kids explore their five senses through hands-on activities, including making optical illusions, using magnification to view small aquarium animals and touching common classroom items. They’ll also compare and contrast the Aquarium animals’ senses. Tuesday, Feb. 21  –  “Wacky Water Fun”  Discover why water is so important. Kids will create water-molecule crafts, try to make a penny float, race water droplets through an obstacle course and make a crystallized snowflake. They’ll also meet live intertidal animals and explore how water is vital to them. Wednesday, Feb. 22  –   “Marine Mammal Mania”  Spend the day learning about The Maritime Aquarium’s fabulous furry friends. Visit our otters and seals to observe their behaviors. Touch artifacts to learn about animal adaptations for survival. Discover how the Aquarium cares for these animals and help to create an otter “enrichment toy.” Thursday, Feb. 23  –   “Science of Toys”  How do rockets work? Can you make your own paint? Spend a day figuring out the science behind some of your favorite toys and art media … and then make them! Friday, Feb. 24  –  “Coastal Critters”  Roll up your sleeves to meet animals found along our rivers and beaches. You’ll learn to group animals based on common characteristics and compare animals that live along rivers to those that live at the beaches. Plus, see an IMAX® movie and conduct food preference experiments with live crabs.

For ages 9 to 12:

“Junior Marine Biologist”

In this five-day program, students get involved in the inner workings of the Aquarium’s animal-husbandry staff, with the goal of setting up, stocking, feeding and maintaining an aquarium display of Long Island Sound marine life. They’ll use water-chemistry meters to monitor water quality, grow brine shrimp to feed their animals and participate in squid and fish dissections. No matter the child’s age, cost of the “Winter Vacation Adventures” program is $85 per day or $395 for the full week. Pre-care is $15 additional per day or $65 for the week.Children should bring a bag lunch, a snack and an appetite for adventure.Space is limited and advance registration is required.

Mishka

Mishka had a unique childhood and extraordinary upbringing. Born to a Bermudian father and Nova Scotian mother, he grew up on his family’s boat, sailing from island to island in the Caribbean. A child of the islands, it was almost inevitable that he’d be drawn to reggae, Rastafari, and the natural mystic that inhabits his music and soul. His music carries a unique vibe, not unlike a combination of Peter Tosh, Jimmy Buffet, Bob Dylan and The Police mixed with real roots reggae acts like Culture, Marley and Burning Spear.

He began with a career in windsurfing, representing Bermuda in the early ‘90s and gradually made the full switch to creating soulful, folk- and rock-influenced reggae music. With an enormous following in the UK and Japan, he has a tight-knit and fast-expanding fan base in the States. Mishka is the face of O’Neill’s new line of eco-friendly surf clothing and he embodies the summery spirit of reggae, fully representing its ability to lift people up and keep them up.

Foreigner

With 70 million+ records sold it’s no wonder they’re universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world

Foreigner will forever be remembered for their uber-famous classic rock tunes, like “Feels Like the First Time,” “Waiting For a Girl Like You,” “Cold as Ice” and “Jukebox Hero.” And if you ever sat and dreamed of them coming to The Klein, you can stop now.

Recently, Foreigner celebrated the 35th anniversary of their formation with a three-disc CD/DVD set by going acoustic, electric and live. The accompanying tour will be a rare treat.

Formed by Mick Jones in 1976, with ex-King Crimson rocker Ian McDonald and singer Lou Gramm. They have sold more than 70 million albums across the world and they’re getting ready for a lot more, with Feels Like the First Time, containing a pair of CDs entitled Acoustique: The Classics Unplugged and Juke Box Heroes: Brand New Digital Recordings of Foreigner’s Greatest Hits, along with the DVD “Live in Chicago,” which was filmed in March during two shows at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Ill., and will also be shown during PBS’ pledge drive this fall.

The current line-up, rocking since 2005, has revitalized the music of Foreigner and has made it truly feel like the first time, recently playing a mega concert with Journey, Styx and Night Ranger. Their stadium rock performance is unlike anything in rock music today, larger than life and so melodic and huge that you’ll wish they were playing two nights.

Linda Eder

An Evening With Linda Eder

The Ridgefield Magazine Broadway & Cabaret Series

Underwritten by Bruce Bennett Nissan

Partially Underwritten by Adam Broderick Salon & Spa

Dinner and a Show!
Enjoy a free glass of wine with your meal at Sarah’s Wine Bar or a Special Prix Fixe Dinner at Bernard’s when you present your tickets to this event. Both are located at 20 West Lane, Ridgefield 203.438.8282. (Reservations are suggested at Bernard’s )

Showcasing one of the greatest contemporary voices of our time, Linda Eder’s diverse repertoire spans Broadway, standards, pop, country and jazz. Most recently, Linda crowns her two-decade recording career on a new album, Now, which reunites Eder with Broadway and pop composer Frank Wildhorn. The new release marks the musical return of this legendary team after six years. Eder’s transcendent voice is the perfect complement to Wildhorn’s lush, imaginative music. Now introduces 12 dynamic tracks that elevate the spirit while capturing many moods.

She made her Broadway debut in the musical Jekyll & Hyde, for which she received 1997 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Nominations, as well as the Theatre World Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Eder is also featured on the concept albums of several other Broadway shows, such as The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Civil War.

Eder sings a collection of original and cover songs from her studio recordings. The horn and rhythm sections swing hard on the big band arrangements of classic songs from Garland, Streisand, Sinatra and many more music icons. Linda’s powerful, soaring voice brings these Standards and Broadway show tunes to life.

If you want to know how deeply sincere this internally known reggae artist goes, just ask his new boss. That’s right, after Mishka recorded his third album in ‘05, Above the Bones, he connected with the one and only Matthew McConaughey over a shared appreciation for reggae and was welcomed onto his record label, j.k. livin. McConaughey says, “It’s conscious reggae that reminds me to bless up, keep a high eye, work hard, love hard, remember true, hope faithfully, give thanks and just keep livin’.”

“When I heard Mishka sing for the first time, I had to look behind the curtain to see if someone else was doing it, because I couldn’t believe his authenticity and tone.  He is a true artist. There’s not a pretentious bone in his body, which is a rarity in this business.” – Butch Walker, Producer
