“To the Arctic” at the Maritime Aquarium

by:

Follow along as a mother polar bear tries to raise her two cubs in a harsh world that is only getting harsher in “To the Arctic,” anIMAX movie at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. ”To the Arctic” is a story of love, family and survival in the harshest place on Earth. It documents several animal families, including a mother polar bear fiercely determined to keep her 7-month-old twin cubs alive in the face of natural predators and a rapidly changing climate. Through the film, audiences also will travel with a pounding herd of caribou that journeys for miles to their calving ground; plunge into the ethereal underwater world of waltzing walruses; and nearly see their breath as they gaze across snow-bound peaks and a vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean, an exquisite spectacle of sapphire white.

Five years in the making, “To the Arctic” was directed by Greg MacGillivray, whose previous films – including “Everest” and the Academy Award-nominees “The Living Sea” and “Dolphins” – have been among the most popular ever at The Maritime Aquarium.

“I’ve wanted to make a film about the Arctic for a long time,” MacGillivray said in a released statement. “I was still unprepared for what I found in the far North. Everything exists on a grand scale and the sky seems to stretch into eternity.” However, he said, with average temperatures in the Arctic rising two times faster than anywhere else, the region’s once-permanent ice pack is shrinking and may not exist by 2050. Such a reality would affect more than polar bears, so MacGillivray’s response was to establish the One World One Ocean Foundation to create awareness and support for the protection of the planet’s oceans.

“We think audiences will love the compelling story of this polar bear family and the film’s call for environmental conservation,” said Chris Loynd, the Aquarium’s marketing director. “Plus the cinematography is stunning, the film is eloquently narrated by Meryl Streep and it has great music by Paul McCartney. We’re also very excited to offer it at The Maritime Aquarium as part of its worldwide release.”

“To the Arctic” will show through Jan. 17 at 1& 3 p.m. daily in Connecticut’s largest IMAX theater, with a screen that’s six stories high.

Stephen Kellogg at FTC

by:

Stephen Kellogg claims that when he was growing up, his musical interests were divided between his father’s record collection, devoted to ’70s singer/songwriters like Jim Croce and Cat Stevens, and his sister’s rock & roll discs, dominated by hair metal acts like Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe. In a curious way, Kellogg’s music represents a meeting point between these two styles, with songs that delve deep into the personal, but make room for a sense of fun, while the music, which is intelligent and intimate, is also full of passion and electricity.

Imagined Worlds

by:

Imagined Worlds, an exhibition celebrating humor and fantasy in everyday life, will open December 12 and run through January 25 at the Schelfhaudt Gallery in the Arnold Bernhard Center, UB.

Featuring works by Rob Beam, Frank Iovino, kHyal, and Frank Foster Post, Imagined Worlds invites the viewer to consider how contemporary culture and media influence one another and how quotidian life is elevated to art. About the artists:

Rob Beam started by becoming a self-taught flash animator in the late 90s and has since worked with various digital and analogue media and other materials.

Frank Iovino challenges viewers to stop and reconsider ordinary people, places, and things that might otherwise might go unnoticed. Working in pastels, oil paints, and colored pencils, he suffuses his canvases with brightness and light impossible to ignore.

kHyal began creating black-and-white collages as a means to communicate while still a painfully shy child. Her circuitous career includes 20 years as a graphic designer, art director, and creative director for Gap, MTV, and other clients from GAP to MTV. Her work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and museums including in the American Visionary Art Museum, New Britain Museum of American Art, the Outsider Art Fair, and the Cooper Union.

Frank Foster Post drew his first cartoons on napkins, and embraced the technique as an immediate way to convey visual information. He is particularly interested in how elements of a particular image are put together to create change.
