On Sunday March 3, at 1:30 p.m. join The Avon Theatre for a very special screening of The Sessions, followed by a post-film Q&A with actor John Hawkes. The film is based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien. The Sessions tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined-at age 38 to lose his virginity. With the help of therapists and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality.
For his performance, John Hawkes won Best Actor from the Independent Spirit Awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award as well. Hawkes has been working non-stop since his critically acclaimed performance as ‘Teardrop’ in “Winter’s Bone.” Other recent film credits include “Lincoln,” “The Playroom,” and “Contagion.”
John Hawkes was born and raised in rural Minnesota. It was not until he moves to Austin, Texas where he begins his career as an actor and musician. Hawkes has penned many songs featured in films and television shows. His song ‘Bred and Buttered’ appears on the “Winter’s Bone” soundtrack. He also has a band known as King Straggler. They have performed at the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW Music Festival, as well as numerous clubs across the U.S.. Currently he is writing and recording a full length CD.
