“British Invasion” at the Avon Theatre

by:

1366662392_thumbMany British groups had success with their music in the United States in the early 1960s through the 1970s that music critics coined the phrase “The British Invasion.” There were so many popular British artists with so many hit songs in America, that we could not feature all of them in our original show for The British Invasion. Join the Avon Theatre, May 22nd, for a brand new program of different clips that celebrate more of the British groups that continue to inspire us. Among the songs and performers who will be featured are The Troggs with “Wild Thing,” Traffic with “John Barleycorn” and “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” The Silkie with “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” The Yardbirds with “Over, Under, Sideways, Down” and “I’m a Man,” Manfred Mann with “The Mighty Quinn,” Yes with “I’ve Seen All Good People,” Jethro Tull with “The Witch’s Promise,” The Zombies with “Time of the Season,” T-Rex with “Bang a Gong,” and Donovan with “Hurdy Gurdy Man.”

Bill Shelley has been filming since the 1970s when he recorded bands Twisted Sister and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, then later directed music videos for Public Enemy (PE). Shelley Archives was started in 1985 and today the company has over 100,000 reels of original 35mm and 16mm films in its archives and over 10,000 hours of rare concerts, television shows, promos, interviews, out-takes and home movies. Preservation of films and music clips is the main focus of the organization.

Keystone Revisited

by:

1360255841_thumbMay 21st, at the Ridgefield Playhouse, Keystone Revisited plays the songs that Merl and Jerry made famous including “After Midnight”, “The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down”, “Expressway to Your Heart”, “The Harder They Come” along with many more of the songs that made them famous. Keystone Revisited has even written and recorded a few new songs that are with the same heart such as “These Troubled Times” and “It’s A Love Thing”. The band was bought together because of the huge demand from fans to hear more music from the originators of the so-called “Jam Band”. When Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia got together it was pure magic. They were in these groups; Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia, Reconstruction and Legion Of Mary, which were at the forefront of the jam band era.

What better way to pay homage to these legendary players than by having Bill Vitt who played with Merl and Jerry, Tony Saunders, the son of Merl, who started playing with them when he was 18 and continued to play with them both doing other projects, Michael Hinton who played with Merl in High Noon with Mickey Hart and Merl’s Rainforest Band. These three have played with so many of the people we love that their chemistry on stage is electric.

“Dear Governor Cuomo”

by:

1366122210_thumbJoin the Bruce Museum, May 22nd, for a very special Connecticut premiere of “Dear Governor Cuomo”. On a rainy night in May 2012 a coalition of musicians, scientists and activists gathered in Albany on the governor’s front doorstep, calling for a ban on hydraulic-fracturing (fracking). With the news that Governor Andrew Cuomo might lift the moratorium on fracking in New York any day, the event was assembled in less than a month. The goal of the varied participants, many of whom had never met before this night, was to explain in clear terms the environmental, economic and health risks of fracking and to motivate people to rise up against the practice using a unique blend of music and message.

A unique blend of The Last Waltz and An Inconvenient Truth, the film that resulted from the night was written and directed by Jon Bowermaster and filmed under the direction of Academy Award-winning documentary maker Alex Gibney. The stars of the night included actors Mark Ruffalo and Melissa Leo, environmental biologist Sandra Steingraber and a long list of musicians such as Natalie Merchant, Joan Osborne, Dan Zanes, the Felice Brothers, Citizen Cope, Medeski Martin & Wood and more. Jon Bowermaster is a noted oceans expert, award-winning journalist, author, filmmaker, adventurer and six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council. The premiere evening includes VIP Reception and Q&A with filmmaker Jon Bowermaster plus complimentary wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres. Held in partnership with the Connecticut Film Festival and Some Things Fishy Catering.

“Gone Madigan” at the Ridgefield Playhouse

by:

1356123081_thumbIn her 22 year career, Kathleen Madigan has never been hotter, and she will be performing at the Ridgefield Playhouse, Saturday, May 18th. With her new Showtime special, Gone Madigan, in constant rotation and the DVD-CD of the special topping the Amazon and iTunes charts, Madigan has the entire year booked with over 100 theater gigs across the country and numerous television appearances.

Madigan has won the American Comedy Award for “Best Female Comedian” and the Phyllis Diller Award for “Best Female Comedian.” Although she’s has turned down many writing jobs because she loves performing more, Madigan has written and produced for Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil on Comedy Central and for Garry Shandling. “I’ll write for other people–not many– but a few and only if they have a clear voice and persona that I already think is funny and if they let me write in my pajamas and smoke.”

She remains the only comedian in the history of NBC’s Last Comic Standing to go unchallenged by any other comedian–meaning no other comedian would say they were funnier than her. Madigan was a finalist in season 2 of Last Comic Standing and a judge on season 5. “It was fun to judge it once, but
never again. I just can’t think of 2000 ways to tell someone they’re not funny without turning into a full blown alcoholic.”
