Bringing Broadway to Bridgeport

by:

Come to a holiday extravaganza at the Bijou Theatre! Bridgeport’s beautiful downtown Bijou Theatre and Stamford-based The New Paradigm Theatre Company are partnering to create a new holiday tradition to be presented on The Bijou’s stage on December 1 and 2. “Bringing Broadway to Bridgeport” is a family-friendly variety holiday show with performers, singers, and musicians from The New Paradigm Theatre Company. The MC for the event is television star Scott Bryce.

Adding to the glamour and fun of “Bringing Broadway to Bridgeport” will be a personal appearance by Emily Audibert, the current Miss Connecticut. Another highlight of the show is sure to be the appearance of the Bridgeport Boy’s Choir which is comprised of 21 members who attend schools in the Greater Bridgeport area. They are in their 28th season. The choir has proven to be a valuable way to help boys develop musical talent, promote good discipline habits and generate self-esteem. They will be featured in the show with the Broadway performers from The New Paradigm Theatre in some familiar holiday tunes, as well as in a Santa Claus skit that some of the boys will help to write.

There will be two performances on Saturday December 1: 3 PM, 8PM, and on Sunday December 2: 2PM and 7PM.
Ticket prices are $20 for theatre seating, $25 for cabaret seating and tickets for “Bringing Broadway to Bridgeport” can be purchased on The Bijou website or by calling the Bijou.

Bridgeport Public Schools Student Art Exhibit: Fahrenheit 451

by:

With guidance from art instructors and visiting professional illustrators, local students interpret Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and resulting works are exhibited at City Lights Gallery. In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury’s classic, frightening vision of the future, firemen don’t put out fires–they start them in order to burn books. Bradbury’s vividly painted society holds up the appearance of happiness as the highest goal–a place where trivial information is good, and knowledge and ideas are bad. Fire Captain Beatty explains it this way, “Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs…. Don’t give them slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy.”

This event is part of The Big Read, presented by the University of Bridgeport, exhibited at City Lights Gallery,Bpt. Exhibit runs November 28 – December 1, with an Opening Reception: November 30, 5:30 – 7:30pm. Regular Gallery hours are: W-F, 11:30 am – 5:00 pm, Sat. Noon – 4:00 pm. FREE.

Susan White: Picture Perfect

by:

The 1950′s are often portrayed to be the ‘perfect decade’ of American history, where everything was ‘right’ and America was at its best. Flush from victory in World War II, proud of being the good guys, America was booming with growth and optimism, but there was often a subtext behind the smiles in photographs of that time period. Susan White’s exhibit “Picture Perfect” reflects the image of this era with works of oversized graphite drawings of black and white photographs of a ‘picture perfect’ 1950′s family. The works reference the unspoken dynamics between the family members and the effects of those dynamics on the wife and children of the family. Discrimination was sanctioned by cultural norms, children were to be seen and not heard, and wives to be obedient. What happened in families behind closed doors was considered nobody’s business, and not to be discussed. Each time a photograph is taken, either the photographer or the subject is choosing to memorialize that particular moment. The photographer has an agenda and subjects choose to participate. For the artist, the act of making “portraits” of these photos, of memorializing them by increasing the scale and investing so many hours in the process of drawing, is a statement as well. It begs the viewer to question the intention of both the photographer and artist, as well as that of the subjects depicted.

“The theme that runs through all my work, the idea which intrigues me most, is the passage of time and the resultant effects on people and places. The graphite drawing series show the changes over time in the dynamics of a family, for the positive.” Susan White

Exhibition runs 11/11/12 – 12/20/12
